The prevailing model of Church before Vatican II was referred to as the pyramid model, with the pope, bishop, and clerics having the authority in the Church and the laity as the recipients of that authority.  Vatican II retrieved the New Testament model of Church in which all the baptized have gifts of the Holy Spirit which are given for the purpose of building, serving, and leading Christ’s Church.
