“The End of American Exceptionalism”
For most people, foreign-policy decisions aren’t something we think about every day. We often leave it to the experts–the people who know how many troops to send, what treaties to sign, how much funding to contribute–to weigh in on what’s best. Making these decisions requires a lot of specialized knowledge that most of us don’t have.
But rather than dwelling on the technicalities of difficult decisions, what I think people can be comfortable debating is the worldview that shapes the foreign-policy decisions our leaders make . What motivates the way the United States acts in the world? What vision of who we are, and what the rest of the world needs or wants from us, drives our actions abroad?
