Topic: War and Conflict

From October 2001 to August 2021, the United States was actively at war—two decades of fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq in which more than 8,000 Americans died. The conflicts took a far greater toll in the countries where they were waged, with untold thousands of combatants and civilians losing their lives. Our country went to battle in the aftermath of 9/11, … the so-called global war on terror… an expansive term, affording American leaders’ significant latitude in determining what was permissible in the pursuit and even the definition of victory—not to mention justifying the reasons for going to war in the first place. Was it to protect “the homeland” or bring terrorists to justice, to establish liberal democracies or deter a “madman”? …

Commonweal Conversations is a program promoting thoughtful, expansive, intelligent dialogue on issues that matter – whether political, theological, cultural, or artistic. We encourage all participants to offer their opinions respectfully while also generously considering opinions that do not match their own. We learn by listening to others. All conversations will be virtual. Please register for each date separately and you will receive articles to read when you register.
