“Just War & Pacifism”

Christians in countries founded by Christians find themselves in an odd position. Followers of other religions, like Jews and Muslims, have rules in their scriptures for how to govern themselves and others when they hold political power. But the central event in Christian devotion is God’s own political impotence when an enemy empire tortures him to death. Not only does he refuse to resist the soldiers who capture and kill him, but he repeatedly calls his followers to do the same: “If any wish to come after me, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Mark 8:34).
