ANNUAL RELAY FOR LIFE ON JUNE 13 -14.
Relay for Life is the signature fundraiser of the American Cancer Society. Participants raise money by personally collecting donations and organizing fundraisers prior to or at the event. The money goes towards cancer research, patient services, advocacy and education. The Glastonbury Team has been one of the top money raising teams in our Hingham/Hull/ Cohasset/Scituate Relay for the past six years. The event begins on Friday, June 13th with clubs, family, friends and co-workers who form teams and gather at Cohasset High School, starting at 3:00 p.m.
Honoring and remembering those who have faced cancer is an important part of Relay. Cancer survivors are invited to walk a special Survivors Lap. Another focal point is the Luminaria Ceremony, held after dark, when candles are sponsored and lit in honor and memory of loved ones who have battled this disease. It is a touching thing to recall these people whose names are evident on the bags of sand holding the candle as you walk around the track. Most of us forget how many people we know who have been touched by cancer. It is also touching to see how many children and young people, who have experienced cancer in their families, take part in this overnight event. There is a wonderful sense of community, camaraderie and hope that permeates the atmosphere of this event
How can you be involved? You can raise money, you can make a donation to the “Relay for Life”, and you can experience the event on the evening of June 13th. For more information contact Harry St.Onge at 781-383-9457 or at st.onge@comcast.net
SECOND QUARTER CHARITY FOR EARTHEN VESSELS ON JUNE 22nd
On Sunday, June 22nd, the second quarter charity for the Glastonbury Abbey worshipping community will take place. Once again, we are asking assistance for the works of Earthen Vessels in Cambridge whose Executive Director is Marie Claude Thompson. With the help of Harvard University students, Earthen Vessels provide year long tutorial help for inner city children as well as a summer camp experience in Vermont. You can find out more of this good project by visiting their web site at Earthen-vessels.org and their blog at Earthen-vessels-inc.blogspot.com. Suggestions may be sent to brian.thompson@umb.edu
All money left in the collection boxes on the weekend of June 21-22 will be sent, along with a donation from the monastery, to Earthen Vessels. Please make all checks out to Glastonbury Abbey but designate them for either Earthen Vessels or second quarter charity. We thank you on their behalf and thank them for the contribution they make to helping disadvantaged youth. May God bless their endeavors.
